Have Classrooms Changed?

http://lcweb2.loc.gov/service/pnp/nclc/04500/04529r.jpg
This is a photograph taken in 1909 of a classroom in the Hancock School in Boston. Our classrooms today are very different - or are they? Tell us one thing from the photograph that is the same in your classroom and then tell us one thing that you find very different. Would you want to be a student in this classroom? Why or why not?

    1. I wouldn't want to wear a uniform either. I would just want to wear my regular clothes. I also wouldn't want to be in that class because there is no technology.

  2. My classroom has changed. The one thing that is still the same is there are desks and chairs. The one thing that is different is there is a chalk board not a white board. I would not want to be a student in that classroom because it looks dusty and dirty.

  3. One thing that is the same is that they have desks like we do. The thing that is different is they have chalkboards everywhere. I would not like to be a student in that class room because it is very little space. The other thing that is different is chalkboards not whiteboards. That is what I see in the picture.

Also, I wouldn't want to be in the classroom because it looks dirty.

  6. All of the girls are wearing dresses. I don't think that's fair that they can't wear whatever they want. A similarity is our class has a board that the teacher writes on. I would not like to be in that classroom because I bet my school is lot more fun then that one because my school has iPads laptop carts and a bunch of other fun stuff.

    1. I have a feeling you like to run around and play. Is that why you do not want to wear a dress like the girls in the picture did? I wonder if they even owned pants at that time. I'm thinking pants were just for boys.

  14. The same thing is that the classrooms have desks. The different is that the older classrooms have chalk boards and the classrooms now don't have chalk boards they have white boards. I would not like to be one of the students because they have to wear certain clothes. The other difference is their desks are all metal. Yes the classrooms have kind of changed.

  15. Something that's the same is that they have desks that look the same a little bit. Something that's different is that the classroom has a chalkboard not a whiteboard. I would not like to be a student in that classroom because of there uniforms. I would not like to where the same clothes over and over again. It was pretty cool to see a classroom from 1909.

  22. I think the most class rooms changed. And what's diffrent from the picture up there from today is the smart board. If you have one. Because up in the picture it didn't have a smart board. And no I wouldn't want to be in a class room in 1909. Because the teachers were probably mean.

  23. I think that most class rooms changed. One of the difference is that in our class room we have white boards. It looks like they had to wear uniform. We don't wear that in our class room. We only wear a ROAR shirt but on some Fridays.

  24. My gosh, the school in the early 1900's looks very different than the school I work in. The chalkboards are definitely a thing of the past. However, I think that chalkboards were "high tech" back in the early 1900's, much like iPads are high tech for us! I have a feeling kids liked to be able to write on the chalkboard at that time, just like kids like to fiddle on the high tech things we have in our classroom today. I also noticed that the students were lined up in rows. That makes me think that students do their "own" work. Today we do a lot of collaborating and working together. We have to, or we won't be able to function in today's society. I would be happy to go to that school because I know that my great grandma, who would have been about the age of those kids, had to quit school in third grade to help around the house. Not all children had the opportunity to attend school like those children did back then.

  25. One thing I noticed that is different is that instead of a whiteboard, they had a chalkboard. I think they probably liked using the chalkboard and it was very helpful because there is writing all over the chalkboard. I bet that was probably their biggest thing to write on because in those days they did not really have a chance to be writing so when they did get to, I bet they liked it very much. One thing I noticed that is the same is the students had desks. In my class we don't have desks this year but last year we had desks. I think the kids in that class had them so that they could do their own work. I sort of feel bad for them, since they obviously couldn't collaborate and work together. We do that in my class and when we do hard work that's not private and we can think of the answer together, it's easier and can sometimes be fun. I don't think I would like to go to that school because it seems like all the girls wear dresses and I like to run and jump and play. That would NOT be good. That's my different and the same!

  26. I noticed that in the picture there is a chalkboard instead of a whiteboard. On the chalkboard they were writing in cursive instead of print. That school looks very different than school's today. I find Chalkboards harder to write on than whiteboards. I think that schools back then found a chalkboard very easy to use and very helpful for teachers. I also noticed that in the picture the teacher was wearing a dress that looked like it had an apron on it. In these days teachers that are girls can wear pants and skirts. I have not seen a teacher with a dress on that looks like it has an apron on it. Something I found that was the same was everyone was working. Of course that is always going to be the same because school is for learning. One more thing I found the same was there was writing on the boards. Many teachers write writing on the whiteboard like directions or math problems and I saw that in the picture there was a lot of writing. I would have to say I would rather be in school today then in the early 1900's because we have lots of advanced learning tools and technology. That is what I think.

  27. I think that a different thing is that back in the old days they used chalkboards and now in the new days we use white boards and on a chalkboard you use chalk sticks and on white boards you use expo markers. One thing that is the same is that students and teachers use desks and tables. That is what I think is the same and what I think is different.

  28. I have 2 things that are different. 1 is that there is a chalkboard. Not many schools have chalkboards now. Its whiteboard that the schools use now. Another thing that is different is that all the girls including the teacher are wearing dresses. I love to run around, and I like to dress up once in a while so I guess I would not like to go to that school if you have to wear dresses all the time. I have 2 things that I see are the same. The teacher still has her desk. If they did not, the teacher would be walking around the classroom all day. I bet at the end of the day there feet would be tired if they did not have teachers desk. Another thing that is the same is that all the students have desks. The same thing with the students! There feet would be tired at the end of the day. I have a connection. In the picture there is a chalkboard. Someone that goes to my chapel home schools her four boys. They have a chalkboard in the school room I would love to go to that school because I love to make new friends and I love to write on whiteboards.

  29. Wow I see a lot of differences in that picture it is unbelievable that people are thinking that things that we think are not high tech are! One change is the chalkboards most classrooms like the one that I'm in have whiteboards. A lot of the girls wear dresses probably all of them and girls today wear dresses! I really think it is better being at school now because there is a lot more to do!

  30. Wow! Schools have changed a lot!! I can't imagine having chalk boards instead of white boards. Our class relies on technology, so if our class was in the early 1900's, we would be nothing because there was no technology! (I would hate to be living in the early 1900's.)

  31. I saw in the picture that everything was in black and white. My classroom is much more colorful and bright than that classroom. In that classroom there is a chalkboard and I never ever usually see classrooms a chalkboard. I think my classroom is not even close to looking like my classroom because it's not black and white, the girls aren't not wearing dresses, I don't have a chalkboard, and I don't have desks I have tables instead. I don't think I would want to in that classroom because I would not like to wear a dress to school everyday.

  32. I think a difference the classrooms changed because the class is not smiling or looking at the camera which we do those things, Another difference is they have a chalkboard and I know that chalkboards give you a headache, And something that is the same is it's a school & there is a teacher and students.

  33. I saw in the picture that there was a chalkboard and now in every classroom I've ever been in there was a whiteboard NOT a chalkboard. My classroom looks a lot brighter than that classroom but that might be because that picture is black and white. All of the children in the picture do not look like they are happy or enjoying themselves. Because I know that I have fun at school each and every day! I do not know if I would want to go to that school because I do not know what the schools were all like back in "the day". My Great Aunt told me once that I was because my teacher Mrs. Musone is a wonderful teacher because she shows me clever ways to solve be problems and they help me a lot. She said that when she was in school that her teacher would just give her something to do and say "do it" they would not give her some kind of way to solve the problem like an array or something. That made me think for a minute.

  34. One thing that I noticed was that the people that went to school in the olden days used chalk boards that they used old fashioned chalk board that was probably "high tech" back then just like I-pads and I-pods are high tech for us today I think that if the people that went to that school rose from the dead and came to the future (right now) they would probably be like "were did the chalk boards go?" or "What is that silly contraption that you got there sonny?" If I had a Time Machine and I had the choice to go back in time to 1909 and go to that School and live their for a week well.......I would choose yes but when I get there I will defiantly regret it for a lot of reasons here are the top five 1. no video games 2. no TV 3. no cars 4. no I-pods or phones 5. no computers. And stuff like that wouldn't be there in the olden days and if there were no cars I think that that would suck because like if you lived in California and you traveled to Pittsburgh there would be no cars or planes to get you there the only thing that would be there for you to travel would be horses. I think that so if I knew ahead of time that all that stuff wouldn't be there in the olden days my answer would be no way hoe-say because I would be used to be playing video games and watching TV so I think that it would be a nightmare going to that school and living in the olden days.

  35. The school in the 1900s looks way different in the school that I go to now one of the different back then is defiantly the chalk board I forgot they existed we have white boards and instead of using chalk we use markers. One thing that is the same is that the teacher looks like she is collecting papers from students while the other students are still taking a test that looks familiar because nobody finishes at the same time. I also noticed as a bonus that it they look like they have to were a certain clothing we can were whatever we want to.

  36. I think that our school janitor is very happy that he or she doesn't have to clean up all the chalk every day. But back then it was probably extremely high-tech, but now we have Smart Board and iPads. I'm glad we don't have to deal with them. I also nodes that on the chalk board their writing in cursive.

    ReplyDelete
  37. i would not want to be in that class because think about what a mess they would make with the chalk.
Then think about how much more stuff we like electronicswe have.
then think about how much more we would learn in our own class.
