Hare or Hair

Hare or Hair

Words that sound alike but are spelled differently and have different meanings are called homophones. In the English language we have many homophones and it can, sometimes, get confusing as to which word to use.

For example, in my last sentence I might have written witch instead of which. The words sound the same but they have VERY different meanings. Do you know the difference?

See how many homophones you can brainstorm with your classmates. Here is a link to a list of several to get you started. After you have gathered several examples, write a sentence or two that uses one set of homophones. Here are a few examples:
  • Whether or not you liked the weather on Friday, the rain meant many football games were postponed.
  • I am going to the store later to buy two quarts of milk.
  • I cannot write the right answer without a pencil.

Here are a few websites with homophone games you might want to use to practice:

Nice chart for the difference between homophones and homonyms.
